August is rolling in like the Washoe Zephyr so I thought this would be a good time to touch base with everybody about the month ahead.
First off, I want to say that this summer at the docks has been great fun – it is a real joy to get to spend time with all of you and your dogs every weekend and an equal pleasure to see how well many of the dogs are progressing this year. Thanks to all for your patience and participation.

I also want to congratulate all our dogs who participated in the Solano County Fair in Vallejo. This was a very tough competition with some big jumping dogs – but look like everyone from H3D qualified for the finals with Tinka, Starbuck and Sir William in the Pros, and Katie taking 4th in the Open. Sir William and Katie took second and third in the Super Vertical event – both dogs are still chasing that six-foot mark to qualify for the worlds. From the sound of things, and with a little help from a surprise appearance by “Batdog” and “SuperGirl,” everyone had fun and I’m sure enjoyed the cooler temperatures.

Now, looking ahead. I’ll go over the practice dock schedule in a moment. First I want to talk about the Big Event of the month: the Nevada State Fair.
I’ll be posting details of some general information and the competition schedule in the events section of the forum once everything is confirmed. In the meantime, there are a number of new elements to the Fair that I’d like to go over now.
We are in a new location (click here for map) – they are placing us along the southern side of the main events arena – we’ll be part of a kind of “courtyard” area that includes a performance stage, food vendors and even some performing bears (on the opposite side of the courtyard from us, by the way). If you happen to be by the fairgrounds – look for the historic “Harolds Club” mural – we are right below that. When I post information to the forum you will see details about where to park and enter, etc…
The obvious advantage is that we’ll be much more visible this year. Also, the building will help provide shade in the afternoon evening and there is actually a small grass area with trees that we’ll be able to use to stage our dogs between jumps.

We are also anticipating lights this year – so we can continue to operate the pool in the evenings after the competition waves are over. This is something I’d really like to take advantage of and where volunteer assistance (wranglers and trainers) will be critical. We’ll start pulling together a volunteer schedule soon. This is also a great opportunity for those of you who are still unsure about competitions to get some pool time.
Keep an eye on our forum for more details as they become available.
Okay, now about the rest of the month.
Looking ahead, I anticipate business as usual for this weekend (August 1 and 2), and the weekend of August 8 and 9. The sailing club is having an open sailing day on August 9, but they won’t get started until 1:00 p.m. so there should be no overlap.
The docks will be CLOSED August 15 and 16 as most of the members will either be in Quincy or Monterey for Splashdog events. I know for many of you this will be a “first event” and we look forward to sharing the experience with you.
The weekend of August 22 - 23 is the California State Fair in Sacramento. The way things look right now, the Sparks Marina practice dock will be open that Saturday, August 22, but CLOSED on Sunday, August 23. |

June 7, 2009
Saturday proved that damp weather does not dampen the spirit of our splash dogs and Sunday was just a beautiful day to be down at the docks. Thanks to Candice Towell of the RGJ for coming out and taking the pics. More here.

) if you can help out. And tell all your friends to come on down and enjoy a great, local Splash Dogs event. For more detailed information about the jump at Tamarack click here for the press release. June 27-28: I’m anticipating the Sparks Marina practice dock will be CLOSED this weekend so we can all head out to the San Joaquin County Fair in Stockton.
July 3-5: Friday is the holiday so our plans are to hold practice on Friday (July 3) and Saturday (July 4) but we will be CLOSED on Sunday (July 5).
That’s a quick look ahead – feel free to give me a call if you have any questions.
We are also asking all of H3D’s supporters to help with some of our additional fundraising efforts this year. We are looking for raffle items for this Year’s Summer Solstice Splashdown at Tamarack Junction. Contact any of the Board members if you have ideas and can help out in any way.
Remember, we are an all-volunteer club, and if we don’t all volunteer, well….
Looking forward to seeing everyone soon, Bob |

As summer heats up, Auburn was one Hot Weekend for H3D’s Hot Dogs |
|
Memorial Day is fast approaching and it’s time to get the practice docks open for summer. More on that in a moment, first I’d like to recap last weekend’s “Jump for Cash” event in Auburn. This was a really hot weekend for our dogs and handlers. When the final bubble was posted on Sunday afternoon, the temp was well up over 90 degrees and all our H3D members had made the Open or Pro finals out of a field of 87 dogs. Suzy and Tinka, JJ and Riot, Jim and MickeyD, and Sam and Starbuck all earned berths in the Pro Finals where Tinka placed 2nd, MickeyD 6th, Riot 9th and Starbuck 12th. H3Ders also filled the Open Finals where Jen and Samurai took first place after Samurai’s recovery from cold tail, Natalie and Katie came in 2nd, Leland and Sir William came in fourth, Annie and Pepperspot took 6th, and Becky Abner with Miss Matches finished in 9th. Last, and maybe littlest, but certainly not least, JJ’s Rampage jumped over 16 feet to win first place in the Lap Dog finals, while Emma, JJ’s Jack Russell Terrier, came in 6th. Perhaps the best news of all, Sandra reports that the event raised almost $2700.00 for AAARF (Auburn Area Animal Rescue Foundation). Now, back to the Sparks Marina and practices: looks like we’ll be open two of the three days over Memorial Day weekend. We plan to be at the dock on Saturday, May 23 from about 9am until 1pm, and the same hours on Sunday, May 24. We’ll also be open on Saturday, May 30. This is the same day as the Humane Society’s Walk for Animals and stopping by to watch the dive dogs practice is part of their program. Not yet sure that we will have enough volunteers to open on Sunday, May 31 – stay tuned. Remember that the Summer Solstice Fun Jump and Competition will be held at Tamarack Junction on June 19, 20 and 21. We’ve got an exciting event lined up this year with two competition waves planned for Friday evening, the Fun Jump for 9a-2p on Saturday, followed by two more competition “big air” waves and one Super V. We’ll get an early start on Sunday with two more competition waves and the finals. To add to the fun, we are also planning to hold a raffle at the Summer Solstice event. Anyone with donation ideas please come forward – the more the merrier, as they say. This is an ambition undertaking and everyone’s help will be needed. Thanks to the volunteers who have already come forward. If you are interested in joining in, please contact Natalie Jayne by emailing:

4-H offers K-9 Workshop for Kids |
|
Youth ages 9-19 will have the opportunity to work with and learn more about their dogs at the K-9 Workshop for Youth from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 14 at the Reno Livestock Events Center Pavilion. The cost is $2 with an RSVP or $3 the day of the event. The program, sponsored by University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s 4-H program, gives participants the chance to learn more about man’s best friend, including information on dog grooming and common dog diseases. There will also be workshops on how to weave poles, information on Saint Bernard rescue and how to judge a heeling pattern. Participants do not have to be 4-H members. “There is a lot of good information in this workshop,” Cindy Smullen, 4-H community-based instructor and coordinator for the event, said. “These are the topics that a lot of people have questions about.” Smullen also noted that the workshops and information sessions will be taught by a professional trainer, a professional groomer and a veterinarian technician. Each of the workshops, except for the grooming session, is new to this year’s event. This will make workshop participants better informed, and they will have an easier time working with their veterinarian, Smullen said. Those who attend are asked to bring his or her dog, a crate, folding chair, dog treats, water dish and a lunch. For more information about the workshop or to RSVP by Feb. 9, contact Smullen at (775) 784-4848 or

Local H3D'ers at Splash Dogs Nationals! |
|
Everyone who got their dogs down to the dock this year has reason to be proud. As the 2008 season comes to a close, three of those dogs – and handlers – deserve special recognition for representing H3D at the 2008 Splash Dogs Dock Jumping Competition at the Cynosport® World Games in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Our good friends Sir William and Leland put in an impressive show after a long journey, making it to the Senior Division semi-finals with a pair of jumps at 18 feet and over. Miss Katie surprised even Natalie with her showing in the Super-Vertical competition, making it to the finals where they place 16 out of 21 dogs – very cool for a first try at the SV in a major competition. Flying high, as well as high-flying, Katie and Natalie pulled off a whopping 19.7 jump to place third in the final of the Senior Division. Then there is Tinka. By now I think it’s safe to say the club’s top dog. Our Nevada State Fair winner made it all the way into the World’s Sunday Pro Finals where she once again exceeded the 20 foot mark to place 9th overall. The World Games cap off an incredible season for spirited little Tinka and handler Suzy Nicholson, congratulations to both. So, time to look ahead to the next season. Next summer may feel a long way off, but with Splash Dog events planned for early and mid January in San Mateo and Sacramento, and plenty of planning to do, the marina docks will be open again before you know it. It’s my pleasure to announce that Natalie Jayne has decided to join Leland and myself on the club’s board. We are already seeing the benefits of the ideas, energy and enthusiasm Natalie has for the club, matched only by Katie’s energy and enthusiasm on the dock. Carolyn Kelly, whose “grand-dog” is still just getting his feet wet on the ramp, has offered to join the board as well to help keep our administrative affairs in order. We’ll be meeting regularly over the winter, at least once a month. We encourage all members to join us as we work to create a vision and plan for the club’s future. Jennifer Howell (Samurai) has been coming to the meetings to help advocate ideas for increasing junior handler participation in dive dogs and bringing forward ideas for club activities. This kind of participation goes a long way toward building a five-star club. Our next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 9 at the Denny’s on Nugget Ave. in Sparks – we’ll continue to post meeting times and locations as we plan them and hope members will take the time to join us, if for no other reason than to just stay in touch and talk dogs. As I mentioned, Splash Dogs is planning for an event in San Mateo for January 8 – 11, and one the following weekend in Sacramento. Keep an eye on splashdogs.com for details. Thanks for a wonderful, memorable 2008, looking forward to working together for greater things in 2009. |

Reno gets sneak preview of new Disney documentary for sailing club fundraiser
The inspirational Morning Light film will be shown at UNR Friday, October 11 Reno, Nevada. Fifteen young sailors, six months of intense training, one chance at the brass ring. Roy E. Disney’s latest true-life documentary tells the story of the youngest crew ever to take on the 2,500 mile TRANSPAC ocean race. As crew of the 52-foot racing sloop Morning Light, these determined young men and women match their skills against some of the world’s top sailing professionals in the open ocean between California and Hawaii. This inspirational film will debut in Reno one week before it is scheduled to open in theaters as part of a fundraiser for Sierra Nevada Community Sailing, a local educational non-profit that has taken advantage of the Sparks Marina to bring sailing to youth and sailors with disabilities in the Reno-Sparks area for the first time.
| What: | Sneak Preview of the new Disney documentary Morning Light. | | When: | 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 11. | | Where: | Joe Crowley Theater on the 3rd Floor of the Student Union, University of Nevada, Reno. | | Cost: | $20 | | Contact: | Lori at (775) 852-2320, or Bobbie at (775) 342-5920. |
Morning Light is a film for all ages and you don’t need to be a sailor to be wowed by its visual and moral. The challenges of a long-distance ocean race at this level are among the toughest in sports today. The film shows how the physical, mental and emotional demands of a team endeavor can have a great and lasting impact on young people. The film follows the crew from their earliest training sessions in Hawaii through their test of endurance on the high seas. The crew forms an unbreakable bond in the process of becoming a singular team that is greater than the sum of its parts. “It’s a condensed version of life – how to get along with people, how to deal with adversity,” Disney’s co-producer Leslie DeMeuse said. “You can’t just walk off a boat in the middle of an ocean. If something goes wrong, you have to resolve it. “Rising to the challenge, accepting others and accepting differences not as weaknesses but as strengths – these things make you a better human being,” DeMeuse said. Disney hopes the film will bring greater diversity to the sport by inspiring new generations of sailors from different backgrounds. This vision fits perfectly with the mission of Sierra Nevada Community Sailing. Nicknamed the Sagebrush Sailing Academy, Sierra Nevada Community Sailing is the only non-profit community sailing association in Nevada. Sierra Nevada Community Sailing aims to use sailing as a fun, healthy way to teach boating safety, community values, and leadership skills to everyone who wants to learn, or to those who would simply like to improve on current capabilities. Every summer at the Sparks Marina, the group offers instruction with an emphasis on families and children. This year marks the organization’s seventh year of operation. The club also offers an innovative Adaptive Sailing program, using specially designed, accessible boats to open the world of sailing to persons with disabilities.
